Department Overview:

Badger Talks is housed in UW Connects outreach programs, which provides programming around the state through the Office of State Relations. This office builds relationships with stakeholders and citizens while developing and implementing strategies to advance UW-Madison's priorities with the state legislature, the governor, and other state government agencies.

Housed in beautiful Union South, Badger Talks strengthens relationships with Wisconsin communities by facilitating over 400 events each year featuring faculty and staff experts who have dynamic and engaging ways of presenting their knowledge and research. The programs also produces pre-recorded talks and podcasts.

Schedule:

Hours: ~12 hours per month based on events and availability (hours are split between event coverage and post-production). This position will attend an average of one Badger Talks event per week. The schedule will vary based on the event calendar.

This position is primarily event based and off campus, so regular office hours are not expected. A valid driver's license is required. A personal vehicle is not required.

Break Policy: No work mid-December through mid-January.

Compensation & Benefits: $20 / hour (with opportunity for performance-based raises), 30% discount at Wisconsin Union food outlets, and a laptop provided for position use., if needed.

Qualifications:

Current undergraduate or graduate student with social media influencer experience; dynamic and social with a knack for engaging with others of all ages. Ideal candidate will have a proven track record of boosting a brand online through social content on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. They are confident on camera, understand social media trends, and have strong online presence. Highly organized, detail-oriented, with experience editing video and posting to social channels with knowledge of and capable of managing multiple project timelines independently.

Must be available to work through the upcoming 2026/2027 academic year (not including academic breaks).

The ideal candidate will have:

Social Media Content & Editing:
- Knowledge of social media platforms, trends, algorithms, and content strategies
- Understanding of branding, audience engagement, and influencer marketing
- Ability to create engaging photos, videos, captions, and short-form content
- Proficiency with content creation and editing tools
- Ability to analyze social media insights and performance metrics

Communication:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong creativity, originality, and storytelling abilities
- Ability to build and maintain an online community
-Confidence speaking on camera and representing a brand

Professionalism:
- Very organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously; fast and accurate social posting; reporting tasks completed at the end of each shift
- Excellent time-management and organizational skills
- Professionalism, adaptability, and attention to detail
- Ability to collaborate with marketing teams, brands, and other creators

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Event Coverage & Driving Logistics:
- Coordinate with the Marketing Specialist to sign up for events based on availability.
- Use your own or use a UW fleet vehicles for off-campus events when needed.
- Represent Badger Talks and UW-Madison in a professional, engaging manner on-site.

On Site Content
- Attend approximately one event per week to capture behind-the-scenes content, event highlights, speaker interactions, and attendee experiences.
- Interview speakers, attendees, and community members on camera to create engaging social video content.
- Film "teaser" videos on location (e.g., "Come with me to attend a Badger Talk at..").

Post-Production & Content Strategy:
- Edit captured footage into polished, short-form videos (Reels, TikToks, shorts).
- Brainstorm creative content ideas aligned with current trends and audience interests.
- Catalogue and organize photos and video assets following events.

Social Media & Marketing Support:
-Create and schedule short form video posts across Badger Talks social channels (tag relevant campus units or venues and engage with online audiences).
-Write engaging captions and tag relevant UW–Madison units, speakers, venues, and community partners

This position is for someone who has fun talking and engaging with others, and learning about many new topics and run areas of research. You should be comfortable walking into an event, approaching someone, asking them a question, and turning that interaction into a fun piece of content. You do need to be curious, creative, and comfortable talking with adults in a professional setting.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to build their portfolio working with a high level brand, get real event experience, expand their network, and create content that gets published.

Physical Demands:

Expect some standing for extended periods during events and walking when using a UW fleet vehicle for off campus events.
