Course description listed below: How can we meet the needs of a growing population while protecting our environment, strengthening communities, and building a sustainable future? Sustainability is one of the most important and complex challenges of the 21st century, requiring collaboration across science, business, engineering, policy, and environmental disciplines. This course invites students to explore the interdisciplinary study of sustainability while gaining insight into the diverse academic pathways, fields of study, and career opportunities available at UW–Madison and beyond. Through hands-on activities, field investigations, case studies, discussions, and problem-solving challenges, students will examine how sustainability principles are applied to address real-world environmental, economic, and social issues. Using the framework of the "three pillars" of sustainability, people, planet, and prosperity, students will explore topics such as climate change, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, food systems, natural resource management, environmental conservation, water resources, green technology, and responsible business practices. As they investigate sustainability from multiple perspectives, students will gain exposure to a wide range of disciplines, including life sciences, agricultural and applied economics, environmental studies, engineering, physical sciences, and related fields. Students will explore how these areas contribute to developing innovative solutions for a more sustainable future while learning about the knowledge, skills, and educational pathways that prepare professionals to work in sustainability-focused careers. Throughout the course, students will explore how researchers, engineers, scientists, business leaders, policymakers, and community organizations work together to address global challenges and create lasting change. By the end of the course, students will have developed a deeper understanding of sustainability theory and practice, gained exposure to UW–Madison majors and areas of study, and discovered the many career pathways available to those seeking to make a positive impact on the future of our world.
