Schedule:

Chemistry classes meet during the 8-week summer term from June 17 through August 11. Mandatory TA training occurs the week of June 10. Organic Chemistry Laboratory sections (CHEM 344) meet in-person. Organic chemistry I (CHEM 343) and Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 345) meet online. See Course Search & Enroll for specific meeting times. Exact section assignments are not finalized until about a week before the start of classes.

Number of Positions:

3-9 positions. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The assured consideration date is April 26, 2024.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate students with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field are eligible to apply. A full year of organic chemistry with laboratory is required to teach organic chemistry (CHEM 343, 344, 345).
  • Non-native English speakers must have a satisfactory score on the SPEAK test. Those who scored a 26/30 or higher on the speaking section of the iBt TOEFL test or 8.0 or higher in the speaking section of IELTS are exempt from the test.
  • Candidates needing the SPEAK test should email undergrad@chem.wisc.edu as soon as possible to schedule the test. The only remaining test date for summer 2024 TA candidates is April 22, 2024.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Applicants should enjoy chemistry and be eager to share their enthusiasm for the subject with other students! The successful candidate will have excellent communication and time management skills, be able to work with students of diverse backgrounds, be a team player, and be dependable, professional, and willing to learn.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The summer TA position in Chemistry is a 50% appointment, averaging 20 hours per week over the 8-week term, plus one week of training. For CHEM 344 Organic Laboratory, TAs are responsible for teaching one lab section of ~18 students. For CHEM 343 and 345, TAs are responsible for teaching two discussion sections with ~30 students per section and attending whole class meetings. Other TA responsibilities for all courses include attending staff meetings, holding office hours, proctoring exams, and grading. Summer term courses include:
CHEM 343, Organic Chemistry I (online)
CHEM 344, Organic Chemistry Laboratory
CHEM 345, Organic Chemistry II (online)

Required training begins Monday, June 10 and continues through Friday, June 14, 2024. If you cannot attend in-person training, you should not apply.

To teach online CHEM 343 or online CHEM 345, applicants must reside in the U.S., preferably in Wisconsin, during the summer term and must abide by a remote work agreement.
