Position Summary/Job Duties:

Southeast Asian Flagship Language Initiative (SEAFLI) Language Partners

SEAFLI language partners will work with Indonesian/Thai/Vietnamese language students and will participate in a mandatory orientation meeting at the beginning of the summer. The orientation meeting addresses general topics such as the goals of the SEAFLI Program, expectations of SEAFLI students and language partners, program logistics, remuneration, supervision, and procedures for addressing questions or problems. This orientation will take place during the first week of classes, which runs from June 17-21.

At the beginning of the summer, language partners are assigned to SEAFLI students with whom they meet two times per week for one class hour (50 minutes). Each meeting will be held at a location conducive to language practice and at a mutually convenient time. Language partners should contact their assigned students to arrange the first meeting. Language partner sessions begin during the second week of classes, the week of June 24, and continue through the last week of classes, the week of August 5. If it is necessary to reschedule in a given week, language partners should notify their direct supervisor, Purnima Thakur, and schedule a make-up session with students as soon as possible.

Preparation for language partner sessions should be minimal; language partners should not prepare for sessions with students as they would for a regular language class. Language partners are paid for a half-hour of preparation for every class contact hour with students.
Language partners are expected to keep appointments with students, submit weekly reports on language partner sessions, and keep their Supervisor informed of any concerns. Language partners may work with multiple students during the summer; however, each session is anticipated to be one-on-one.

Duties:
70% Practice language conversation with assigned student(s)
Work with assigned students in the target language to enhance their speaking and listening language skills in the target language. Work with Supervisor and the Indonesian/Thai/Vietnamese Pedagogy Coordinator, to outline specific language areas (listening, speaking, writing, etc.) where each student may need additional practice. Following the instructions of the Supervisor and the Pedagogy Coordinator, incorporate these lessons into the conversation practicum. Spend 90% and above of the time with the students conversing in the target language. Use visual prompts and body language to convey concepts in the target language that the students do not understand to encourage the students to think and speak only in the target language. Meet with each student for 1-hour conversation practice, two times per week for seven weeks during the 8-week summer session (tutoring weeks are week 2-8). Manage the meeting schedule for all assigned students.

20% Prepare conversation topics and vocabulary lists for tutoring sessions in keeping with the stated needs and interests of the student(s)
Work with the Supervisor and Pedagogy Coordinator to ensure language partner sessions are prepared in a manner to augment the classroom experience. As necessary, prepare vocabulary lists and conversation topics that are in the stated area of interest of the students and are approved by the Supervisor and Pedagogy Coordinator. For each one-hour language partner session, plan for thirty minutes of preparation prior to the conversation practicum. Meet with the Supervisor and Pedagogy Coordinator for 30-minute weekly check-ins to ensure that the needs of the student, the program, and the classroom instructors are paramount in every language partner session.

10% Prepare weekly reports for the Supervisor and Indonesian Pedagogy Coordinator highlighting the individual language partner sessions, issues raised, and areas for improvement.
Prepare seven weekly reports during the summer term, beginning with week two of the 8-week summer term and ending with week 8 of the summer term. Each report will highlight the sessions with assigned students and highlight weaknesses, strengths, improvements, and suggestions for more successful sessions moving forward.
