Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members, and visitors through shared cultural, social, and recreational events and experiences.

Wisconsin Union Summer Camps run Monday - Friday starting July 14th though August 1st. Counselors will be scheduled to work 8 hours shifts per day during the hours 7:00 AM-6:00 PM

Additional Scheduling Notes

There will be required training dates in mid to late May

Minimum Hour Expectation

Counselors will be expected work 35-40 hours per week.

Wisconsin Union Summer Camps are Monday - Friday, July 14th through August 1st, 7:30 AM-5:30 PM

Unit Location

Summer Camps will be based at Union South with some programming in Memorial Union, and other locations on campus.

Salary/Wage Range:

Hourly $15.00 to $15.00

Position Summary/Job Duties:

  • Maintain a safe space for campers, including careful supervision of campers and communicating any safety concerns to supervisors
  • Serve as a role model for campers
  • Actively participate with campers in camp activities and conversation
  • Sustain a positive environment at camp, incorporating enthusiasm into all activities
  • Organize and lead small and large group activities
  • Appropriately respond to and mitigate any camper behavioral issues
  • Communicate and interact with youth and adult participants
  • Keep track of time throughout the program
  • Set up and take down activity space
  • Participate in onboarding and youth safety training
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • A desire to work with young children
  • Communicate effectively with people of all ages
  • Valid Adult & Pediatric CPR/AED/FA Certification or ability to obtain prior to first day of camp
  • Must be able to attend all training dates in mid to late May and be available during the entire camp session (July 11-August 1)
  • Excellent communication skills across demographics
  • Organizational skills (Attendance keeping, Lesson timing)
  • Preferred applicants will have experience in youth activities and summer camps AND/OR completed coursework in Teaching, Physical Education, Human Development and Family Studies, or related fields
  • Must be able to project voice when giving instructions to the group in large, busy spaces with or without accommodations
  • Ability to navigate campus with or without accommodations
  • Successful completion and passing of a certified background and National Sex Offender Registry check - please note there will be two background checks to complete for this position 

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
