Department Overview: | Madison Modern Market—an independent boutique located on State Street in Madison, WI—is seeking enthusiastic and self-motivated Sales Associates and Key Holders to join our small team. We are looking for part-time employees who are available to work at least 15 hours a week and would like to grow in a design-oriented retail environment.
Madison Modern Market is a shopping destination providing design-focused gifts for home and on-the-go. Family owned and founded in 2013, we are a lifestyle store for those who value unique yet functional items and aim to provide our customers with a personal, positive experience. Ideal candidates should enjoy the State Street shopping environment, appreciate our curated selection of merchandise, have a passion for excellent customer service, and take pride in creating a welcoming atmosphere for our customers.

Schedule: |
- At least 15 hours of flexible weekday and weekend availability during our store hours, including afternoons and evenings. Must be consistently available on weekends and before/after holidays. Please note this is not a seasonal position—canditates should be willing to commit to a minimum of 6 months of employment.
- Key Holders must be available in the morning and/or evening (preferred) to open and/or close the store.
- Must be available during special events, including Maxwell Street Days weekend (always the third weekend in July, Thursday-Sunday).

Position Summary/Job Duties: |
- Welcoming and actively engaging with our customers to create memorable, immersive experiences for all. Recognizes that individual performance directly impacts both customer satisfaction and the store’s overall success.
- Assisting with customer purchases; making recommendations and sharing additional information about our merchandise and vendors. • Staying current on all merchandise, vendors, and store systems/policies/procedures.
- Processing sales through our point of sale (POS) system, ensuring products are correctly entered in the POS system and all cash, credit, and gift card/certificate operations are processed efficiently and accurately.
- Assisting in receiving and preparation of shipment and new merchandise.
- Upholding store cleanliness and organization standards. Maintaining the sales floor by straightening and remerchandising our creative displays, refilling back stock, and daily replenishment of sold merchandise.
- Opening and closing the store (alongside management) following company procedures.
- Mitigating product loss, monitoring for theft, and following store security procedures. Maintaining a safe environment for customers and employees by complying with store policies and local laws.
Additional Key Holder responsibilities include:
- Overseeing sales, returns, exchanges, and customer service inquiries in the absence of store management.
- Leading opening and closing shifts following company procedures. Ensuring that registers are properly opened and closed; confirming that deposits are properly balanced, discrepancies are reported to management, daily sales are settled and posted, and all cleaning procedures are completed.
- Supervising, teaching, and guiding employees to complete tasks and achieve goals in the absence of store management.
- Working alongside management to ideate, create, and initiate action plans to drive sales, customer engagement, employee engagement, and operational excellence. Taking initiative to drive for results and proactively creating solutions to solve problems.

- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to initiate connection. Eager to create a memorable experience – hospitable, helpful, anticipates needs, and possesses excellent selling skills.
- Maintaining a strong level of professionalism, respect, and integrity while representing the store.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Values a small team environment and proactively seeks to support others.
- Ability to multi-task, practice efficient time management, rise to challenges, be adaptable, and be accountable for your work.
- Previous experience in retail and/or customer service industry strongly preferred, although we are willing to train those who demonstrate accountability, growth from past experiences, and a willingness to learn. Key Holder applicants should have previous leadership experience in retail and/or customer service industry and must be able to demonstrate maturity, organization, and initiative.
- Must follow all CDC, Wisconsin, and Dane County ordinances/guidance regarding public health emergencies (COVID-19 vaccination is strongly preferred for all employees).
- Interest in art and design is a plus.

Physical Demands | While performing duties of the job, you will be required to maintain an active sales floor presence—including standing and walking for extended period of time, lifting a maximum of 40lbs, and using a step ladder. |
