Department Overview: | Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.
As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:
Do you have leadership experience and want to be part of creating an awesome, safe experience for kids this summer? MSCR is looking for experienced, reliable, and creative staff to work in our school-based elementary summer recreation program SREC (pronounced like Shrek the ogre). SREC ADs play a significant role in the everyday operation of the site, including supervising staff and students on and off campus. Form meaningful relationships with staff and students while leading, coaching and supporting the team. Paid professional development and training are provided. SREC Snapshot
• SREC sites provide programming for summer school students in grades 4k-4 (up to 200 students per site location)
• Each classroom has 15-18 students supervised by two Program Leaders.
• ADs typically supervise all students and staff within a grade level cohort.
Job Description & Duties:
• Work as a team with Site Director & ADs to plan, prepare and oversee a six-week summer program for elementary-aged children.
• Plan and facilitate training for Program Leaders during training week.
• Supervise and provide ongoing support and feedback to program leaders
• Organize weekly special events for participants
• Assist with behavior management, including crisis intervention if needed
• Communicate with parents as needed
• Assist with programming and supply coordination and organization
• Supervise field trips
• Other duties as assigned
Leadership Training:
• New ADs only: Intro to SREC – Thursday, May 21, 5:30-7:00pm @ MSCR Central
• All ADs: Inclusion Training – June 3, 6-8pm @ Holtzman Learning Center
• All ADs: limited hours from May 22 through June 11 for prep. Times will be coordinated by the Site Director
• Leading training for Program Leaders Friday, June 12, and Monday, June 15-Thursday, June 18, 10am-5pm on site (times may vary)
• All ADS: limited hours the week of August 3rd for final cleanup
Mandatory Training Week:
• Assistant Directors will help lead training Friday, June 12 from 10:30am-2:30pm, and Monday, June 15-Thursday, June 18 on-site from 10:30am-4:30pm.
• There will be no training on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
Program Dates: June 22-July 31, 2026
Holidays/No program (unpaid): Friday, June 19 and Friday, July 3.
