Department Overview: | You would be employed by us – The Tuohy Family. Our daughter Audrey sustained a spinal cord injury in a car accident when she was 9. Now 17, she is your typical high school girl but needs additional assistance due to her physical disabilities. As mentioned, she is very outgoing, social, is very active in sled hockey and is the high school football manager in the fall. Mom (Meghan) is a nurse, dad (Ryan) is an engineer and we have 3 additional young children (7, 4 and 2). Care is provided primarily in our home and with so much going on you will likely end up interacting with some or all of us when you’re over. If desired you can join along on occasional outings for recreational activities, appointments, or community events. Our previous respite care providers have been appreciated and trusted extensions of our family. Because of the personal nature of the role, we are looking for someone who is dependable, compassionate and professional. We can train the right person but want to find someone who fits well into our home.

Position Summary/Job Duties: | We are seeking a compassionate, responsible, and motivated college student pursuing a degree in nursing or another healthcare field to assist our teenage daughter with personal cares, ADLs and other general needs. Our daughter is 17, an incoming high school senior who is very social and enjoys spending time with people close to her age. She plays sled hockey, manages the football team, and is learning to drive! We're looking for someone who can build a genuine relationship with her while providing support with her activities of daily living (ADLs). This position offers a unique opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on patient care experience while simultaneously making a difference in the life of a teenager with a spinal cord injury.
Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), including:
-Transfers and providing reminders for pressure relief/offloading
-Exercise, stretching, and recreational activities
-Dressing, personal hygiene, and grooming
-Bathing and toileting (this includes catheterization and bowel program)
-Medication administration and meal preparation
-Laundry and linen changes related to her care
-Additional medical cares as they arise
• Provide light housekeeping related to our daughter's care and encourage independence and daily living skills when appropriate.
• Ensure our daughter's safety by providing attentive, compassionate care. This includes fostering a supportive, trusting relationship that promotes emotional, social, and personal growth.
• Communicate effectively with both our daughter, us (parents) and any other family members or healthcare professionals (as needed) regarding her care.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding our daughter, our family, and any medical information encountered during employment.
• Practice appropriate infection control and maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
• Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations.

Qualifications: | Required Qualifications
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Reliable transportation.
• Dependable, compassionate, and comfortable working in a home environment.
• Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
• Current nursing student or pursuing another healthcare-related degree.
• Nursing Assistant (CNA/NA) certification.
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• Experience working with children or individuals with disabilities is preferred but not required—we are happy to train the right candidate.
