Department Overview:

Campus and Visitor Relations serves as the "front door" to UW-Madison. Our Tour Guides are welcoming, enthusiastic, and informative ambassadors of UW-Madison, and help people navigate campus and surrounding communities. Through a variety of programs, Tour Guides provide customized tours, prospective student and family tours, and daily tours.

Remote Work Eligibility Detail:

Tour Guides are currently working in-person, and all Tour Guides must:

  • Be available for a minimum of two shifts during the week and 1 weekend shift
  • Be available for at least two tour guide shifts, Monday – Friday, 9:30am/10:45am to 1:00 pm and/or 12:00pm/1:15pm to 3:00 pm
  • Be available for 1 weekend shift either Saturday or Sunday (if home football weekend) from 9:30am/10:45am/11:45am to 1:30 pm
  • Specialty and virtual campus tours Monday – Friday, scheduled based on guide availability
  • Complete new Tour Guide training 9:00am to 5:00pm, January 18-21, 2022.
  • Participate in one staff meeting per month, usually in the early evening. Staff meetings are currently virtual. Can be excused for academic commitment (class, exam, etc.)

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

10-12 hours per week.


Work shifts are typically 2-3 hours, and most shifts occur between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm

  1. Prospective Student Tour schedule includes tours on:
    1. Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm (AM tour) and 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm (PM tour)
    2. Saturdays, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm (no tours on football Saturdays)
    1. Sundays, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm (home football weekends only)

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

10.30 / hour

Position Summary/Job Duties:

  • Through a partnership with the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, conduct campus walking tours for prospective and admitted students and their families.
  • Lead 45 minute Daily Drop-In Campus Tours.
  • Facilitate customized campus visits for all ages and demographics, including but not limited to:
    • Elementary, middle, and high school field trips
    • VIP foreign and political delegations, conference, and alumni groups
    • Prospective and admitted graduate students
    • Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery guests
  • Provide staffing support for the Wisconsin Ambassador Program.
    • Wisconsin Ambassadors are invited to participate in activities taking place on campus, in the community, and throughout the state by engaging with K-8 students, speaking at UW-Madison sponsored functions, and attending community-based organization activities.
  • Provide services at various resource fairs and assistance at Union South front desk during tour check-ins.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to conduct campus walking tours, bus tours, and trolley tours.
  • Must be able to provide in-person assistance to campus and community guests.
