Department Overview:

Within the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) - Academic Technology, the Information Technology Academy (ITA) is a committed pre-college program that provides students from the Lac du Flambeau, Madison, and Oneida communities the opportunity to explore their interests and to reach their full potential through hands-on technology coursework, college preparatory academics, and personal wellness development that will support their successful completion of high school and matriculation into higher education. For 23 years, ITA has provided educational services to a diverse student population, with the goal of increasing enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented students at UW-Madison.

The Senior Residential Experience (SRE) is a one-week overnight camp for rising seniors in the ITA program. Hosted on the UW­-Madison campus, approximately 40 students from Madison, Oneida, and Lac du Flambeau will receive technology coursework and academic support during day­time sessions. Students also participate in afternoon, evening, and weekend activities such as recreational activities, campus tours, field trips, and study hall. In addition to gaining practical knowledge and experience for the upcoming college application process, students gain familiarity with college life and, specifically, life on UW­-Madison’s campus.

Qualifications:

Qualifications: Seeking highly responsible college enrolled students in good academic standing, completed at minimum 1-year of college, who are making satisfactory progress toward a degree. (UW-Madison, Edgewood, Madison College students are eligible to apply.)

Commitment and experienced in working with a diverse clientele required. Previous experience working as a residential counselor is preferred. Experience working and with high school students is preferred. All finalists are subject to a criminal background check. All hired counselors must complete required Office of Youth Compliance trainings prior to beginning work with program participants.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to work appropriately with high school students in a classroom, residential hall, and community environment. Knowledge of UW-Madison precollege programs and campus resources. Ability to create and facilitate group activities that is in alignment with the UW-Madison Office of Youth Protection and Compliance as well as with the goals and objectives of the SRE program. Ability to work varying day-to-day schedule during SRE. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communications skills essential. Ability to problem-solve and mediate; English fluency required. Advanced knowledge and skill level with a variety of uses of educational technology, including internet tools, such as online calendaring, and email applications.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Oversee an area/group with up to 10 high school residents - days and evenings.
Serve as a mentor and resource regarding policies and procedures.
Help build a sense of community and facilitate activities and programs designed to promote community, wellness, and academic success.
Chaperone on campus events and off campus trips (afternoons, evenings, weekends)
Facilitate move in and move out, creating a warm, organized environment for student/campers and parents.
Serve on emergency duty, which includes serving as a point person for issues that may arise during the day, conducting rounds before bedtime, assisting with lockouts, offering student support, and contacting ITA staff.
Every staff member is to make every effort to try to prevent emergency situations from happening. In the event of an emergency, Counselors are the first line of response in the residence halls regarding issues such as fire and minor medical emergencies. In most emergency situations, the Counselor’s primary role is to call for additional help and to offer support for the individuals involved.
Report unsafe, inappropriate, and concerning behavior.
Work collaboratively with various departments, such as the Division of Information Technology, DeJope Hall staff, University Health Services, campus recreational facilities, Facilities Management, Conference Services, Dining Services, and Athletics.
Complete other duties as assigned.

Walking and leading a group across UW-Madison campus
Lead outdoor activities at Devil's Lake State Park.
Lifting boxes of supplies up to 40 lbs.
