Department Overview:

This internship is offered in partnership with SuccessWorks in the College of Letters and Science through the Community Impact Internship Program.

WORT is a non-commercial, listener-sponsored, member-controlled community radio station broadcasting to South-Central Wisconsin and maintaining an active Internet presence. WORT programming shall respect all peoples and their environments, and shall serve a broad spectrum of the community by:
Providing a forum for both the discussion of public issues, and the expansion of musical and cultural experience, in order to promote greater communication, education, entertainment, and understanding.
Facilitating community expression and providing community access to share music, culture, news, and information.
Challenging the cultural and intellectual assumptions of our listeners through unique and diverse programming.
Including audiences and programmers under-represented by other media.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be UW-Madison undergraduate students.

 

L&S Students are eligible to receive a $500 stipend from SuccessWorks.

 

L&S students who are eligible for work study funding can complete additional requirements, detailed in the "Job Duties" section to receive $12/hour in lieu of a stipend. Work study eligibility is preferred, but not required.

 

**To receive a stipend or work study funding, students must be enrolled in the College of Letters and Science.**

You pay careful attention to details. Details are the currency of the trade.
You have a general understanding of the local media landscape, or a willingness to learn.
You have an understanding of media ethics, or a willingness to learn. Who is impacted? Who is underrepresented?

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Pitch and discuss story ideas with editor. Include potential sources, angles, stakes, ethics, and timeliness.
Identify and locate sources for interview. Schedule, conduct, and record interviews in studio, by phone, by virtual software, or on location.
Identify potential sources of sound relevant to your story and obtain broadcast-quality ambient and interview audio using mics and recorders.
Attend press conferences and events as needed.
Identify and edit sound clips from audio files.
Compose script using conversational broadcast language.
Deliver clear, concise, and factually accurate script. Verify claims.
Turn in script to editor by agreed-upon deadline. Make revisions as requested by editor, and ask questions as needed to seek clarification.

Work Study interns must complete the following additional requirements:
One 30-minute career advising appointment with a SuccessWorks Career Advisor
Participation in one SuccessWorks Careers Event (remote or in-person)
Feedback survey/short interview about their internship experience
