Department Overview:

The Career Exploration Center is the leading campus resource for UW-Madison undergraduates who are looking to explore major and career options. Our office provides advising and tools to help students examine their interests, values, strengths, and skills, so they can make informed decisions about their major and career paths.

Schedule:

This role supports Career Exploration Center events and programs through outreach, direct student support, and by assisting with the unit’s administrative needs. This role will work consistently each week supporting career advising drop-in sessions for exploring undergraduates and will also work events and resource fairs. Weekly schedules typically occur during standard work hours (8:30am-4:30pm) with occasional expected work during evenings and weekends supporting career programs and events.

Students without experience presenting to groups or mentoring others are encouraged to apply! CEC ambassadors will receive training to support their success in the role, and will gradually take on increasing levels of responsibility and leadership as they grow in familiarity with the work.

Qualifications:

--Enrolled undergraduate student in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.

--Able to commit to a regular weekly schedule, and the ability to work after hours for classroom presentations and workshops.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

--Commitment to creating advising environments that support students from all identities and backgrounds.

--Experience building supportive relationships through interpersonal communication, active listening, and rapport building.

--Willingness to learn, ask questions, and seek information/resources to gain clarity and understanding.

--Capacity to manage priorities and meet deadlines.

--Ability to work with others to accomplish goals and tasks.

--Some experience in public speaking.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

--Support career advising drop-in appointments in the residence halls to assist exploring students with career exploration tools including reflection activities, career assessments, Handshake, Wisc.edu, The Guide, Big Interview, and others. These hours will fall from 9am-12pm on Tuesday and/or Thursday in Witte Residence Hall and Dejope Residence Hall.

--Present workshops on major and career exploration both within and outside the classroom to a wide variety of student audiences.

--Promote the Career Exploration Center through tabling on campus and involvement in UW resource fairs.

--Engage in project work based on Career Exploration Center needs and intern skills and interests.

--Assist with staffing career events and programs (examples include career fairs, campus resource fair tabling, classroom visits, etc).
