Department Overview:

The Chadbourne Residential College (CRC) is the university’s largest learning community. At the center of the student experience is our fall seminar, INTER-LS 130: Foundations of a Liberal Arts Education, which enrolls about 150 students every year. In the seminar, first-year students engage in weekly small-group discussions where they explore what it means to be a liberally educated person. Seminar topics include managing the transition to college, how to engage in constructive dialogue, problem solving, and making connections on campus and beyond. Once a month, students also participate in large-group, evening events featuring led by the faculty director or guest facilitators. These events build on the themes from seminar and aim to spark intellectually stimulating discussions between students and faculty.

Schedule:

Seminars are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Instructors will select sections based on availability.

$13,330 total stipend, plus tuition remission and benefits eligibility

Qualifications:

Must be a newly admitted UW-Madison graduate student or current UW-Madison graduate student in good standing and able to take on 50% employment for the fall 2024 semester.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Evidence of excellence in teaching.
• Commitment to collaboration with students, faculty, and staff in supporting the mission of CRC.
• Commitment to providing a transformative liberal arts education experience for all students.
• Formal training in facilitating discussions (e.g. with UW’s Discussion Project) highly desired. • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Leading 4 seminar meetings each week; each seminar enrolls up to 17 students; seminars meet in Barnard Residence Hall, which is adjacent to Chadbourne Residence Hall (420 N. Park St.)
• Weekly meetings with the faculty director
• Lesson planning, grading, interacting with students outside class
• Attendance at monthly evening events in CRC
