Department Overview:

The Office of Sustainability assists the University of Wisconsin–Madison's living model for sustainability by exemplifying values and actions that demonstrate its commitment to stewardship of resources, respect for place, and the health and well being of the broader community, now and for the future.

UW Zero Waste is a strategic initiative for sustainable materials management at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It is a comprehensive endeavor aimed at achieving a variety of institutional zero waste goals. The initiative utilizes cross-functional collaboration that is designed to minimize waste generation, promote sustainable purchasing, save financial resources, yield social benefits, and create a culture of environmental responsibility across the university.

Zero Waste Project Assistants will help on projects deployed across several departments.

Anticipated Hours Per Week:

10-30

Schedule:

Fall/Spring Semester Schedule (10 - 20 hours per week)
Fridays: Must be regularly available for a minimum of 6 hours between 8:00am - 5:00pm
Remaining scheduled hours are flexible
Working during finals week is optional

Summer Schedule (Maximum of 30 hours per week)
Mondays - Wednesdays: Must be regularly available from 9:00am - 12:00pm, 1:00pm - 3:00pm.
Remaining hours are flexible
Winter Schedule (Maximum of 20 hours per week)
Scheduled hours are flexible.

Planned Vacations and Breaks are encouraged.
It is recommended that the student gives the supervisor a minimum of two weeks advanced notice for scheduled absences.

Qualifications:

1. Able to work consecutive semesters and summer terms. Ideal candidates will work until their last semester as an undergraduate.
2. Must have an active driver's license. Project Assistants will drive state-owned vehicles periodically.
3. Enjoy working in small groups to develop an approach to solving a problems and working independently to implement the solution which could include data collection, organization, and analysis.
4. Collaborate and engage (e.g., in-person, email, videoconference, virtual workspaces) with campus partners to identify problems, collect information, and develop solutions.
5. Willingness to learn new software programs through self-guided instruction and research.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1. Creative, critical, and analytical thinking skills
2. Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing data
3. Experience balancing multiple tasks, identifying and solving problems, and working collaboratively with team members
4. Strong communication skills, including corresponding respectfully with campus partners and writing succinct analysis summaries
5. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
6. Experience and willingness to learn graphic design, video production and social media content creation.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The candidate will work closely with the Campus Resource Coordinator (Travis Blomberg) and other campus partners on projects and programs relating to zero waste operations at UW-Madison. Activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Update the campus GIS waste map.
- Lead stakeholder interviews for zero waste certification planning.
- Update web-based content and instructions for the Zero Waste Compass platform.
- Monitor and inspect material collection containers
- Perform waste audits
- Develop process improvements for material purchasing, usage, and disposal.
- Modify bin infrastructure and collection processes
- Update material acceptance guidelines
- Pilot new technologies for material reduction, reuse, and recycling

Physical Demands:

Moderate physical activity: frequent walking/standing/lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
