Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to write and edit multiple forms of content. Demonstrated experience with web content management using a content management system (CMS).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
• Preferred: Familiarity and experience with newswriting style and standards • Preferred: Experience with WordPress or similar content management system • Experience with WiscWeb and UW theme • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Deep commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and factchecking practices • High level of professionalism with team members and internal clients • Knowledge of basic photo and web graphics editing • Some familiarity with best practices in UI/UX and web accessibility • Commitment to best practices for web content in diversity, equity, and inclusion topics and continual learning in this area • Excellent team player, with the ability to work independently to bring tasks to completion • Flexibility with dynamic requests, tasks, priorities, and deadlines
Position Summary/Job Duties:
The Student Communications Assistant will assist members of the School of Medicine and Public Health’s Office of Strategic Communication in their efforts to inform, engage, and inspire the school community. The communications assistant will help draft and edit content for use on the school’s intranet and other internal channels, as well as its public site. They will also serve as an editor to update the intranet using WordPress/WiscWeb. The student will play a leading role in helping the communications team adhere to policies and procedures, such as the school’s institutional social media policy. This role involves receiving and helping prioritize communications and website requests; project management and providing updates to colleagues and clients about the status of tasks; and balancing team and client needs and providing excellent customer service. The communications assistant may assist with research and information gathering to inform communications. As an editor of the intranet, they will make recommendations on content approaches in accordance with best practices recommended by the digital strategy team, helping to design and implement new pages, forms, tables, survey tools, and other content as needed. The position involves selection and basic editing (e.g., resizing) of photos and graphics for use on intranet pages. The communications assistant will write and edit copy based on provided source material, taking direction from team members, and adhering to style standards. Other digital communications duties may be assigned as needed.
