Department Overview:

The Office of Sustainability is a part of both FP&M and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. The center aligns research and education on sustainability with campus operations in the service of environmental, economic, and social responsibility to people and the planet. Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a part of the Office of Sustainability.

Schedule:

• Part-time employment (<20 hr/wk) beginning spring semester 2025; late February/early March through end of semester. Weekly work schedule can be flexible to accommodate class schedule.
• Continuing full-time employment through the summer, mid-May through mid-August 2025; 40 hours per week with some flexibility.
• Possibility to continue part-time employment (<20hr/wk) into fall semester 2025. To be discussed at end of summer season.

Qualifications:

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended period of time.

Must possess a valid driver’s license, have a motor vehicle record that meets UW Risk Management standards, and maintain ability to drive State of Wisconsin owned vehicles.

Must possess first aid/CPR/AED certification or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hiring.

Must possess a commercial pesticide applicator license for Right-of-Way and Natural Resources or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hiring. More info at https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/pat/commercial-order/.

Sturdy work boots, clothing, as well as sun, rain, and insect protection are required. All tools and standard personal protective equipment (e.g., leather gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, helmets etc.) will be provided.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1. Knowledge of ecological restoration principles and management practices.
2. Knowledge and experience with regional native and non-native plant identification, weed control techniques, and cultural requirements.
3. Knowledge and experience with tools and equipment used in land management.
4. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the workplace especially when doing fieldwork.
5. Skills in communication, especially interpersonal skills.
6. Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, quality oriented and to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with Preserve users and co-workers.
7. Ability to operate equipment such as walk-behind brush mowers, brush cutters, and utility vehicles with trailers.
8. Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
9. Ability to work independently or as part of a crew.
10. Ability to read and understand maps and aerial photos for land management purposes.
11. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks including lifting, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, kneeling, and other motions for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions.
12. Ability to keep records and develop reports.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This position supports a variety of land management and site maintenance activities within the 300-acre University of Wisconsin-Madison Lakeshore Nature Preserve. The position operates in coordination with Preserve staff as part of a four-person student crew under the general supervision of the Field Projects Coordinator. Field work focuses largely on vegetation management, including invasive species monitoring, mapping and control (manual, mechanical, chemical) and other activities supporting long-term land management goals. The position assists with routine maintenance of Picnic Point fire circles and public gathering spaces and monitoring the Preserve’s 12 miles of trails. Successful candidates will interact in a positive, professional manner with Preserve visitors, students, and academic users, and establish a productive working relationship with Preserve staff and volunteers.
