Department Overview:

The Research Impact and Outreach (RIO) team is part of the College of Engineering’s Office of Research-Innovation. Our team comprehensively supports the communication of engineering research—from supporting grant development and creating scientific figures, to developing branding and outreach materials for an array of stakeholders. Our team is looking for a team player with big ideas, a collaborative work ethic, and a passion for creative science communication.

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled at UW-Madison, ideally pursuing a degree in Life Sciences Communication, Communication Arts, Journalism, or related field. Must have at least 1 year of undergraduate studies remaining. Our ideal candidate will be able to work during the summer break (up to 29 hours/week during summer).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
• Knowledge of and interest in marketing and communications
• Ability and willingness to understand technical information and develop new skills
• Excellent writing, editing and communication skills
• Experience brainstorming, writing, and editing editorial pieces
• Strong creative drive and style
• Ability to work independently and learn quickly
• Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback
• Ability to meet established deadlines
• Collaborative work ethic
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
• Working knowledge of Adobe Express, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop
Preferred:
• Basic knowledge of WordPress
• Science communication/writing experience
• Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Potential Duties:
• Design and/or produce compelling editorial pieces used to inform, educate, inspire or persuade targeted audiences
• Contribute to the planning, development and publishing of visual assets to support both internal and external communications
• Contribute to the development and design of training materials and presentations
• Contribute to the development of marketing projects and campaigns
• Edit, revise and proofread materials
• Assist with websites managed by RIO

Potential Projects (candidate may choose one per semester):
• Write content for an array of research-related marketing and outreach materials, including for articles, fliers, social media posts, and websites
• Support the development of the organization’s website, helping the team conceptualize, write copy, develop supporting graphics, and execute page creation.
• Help develop materials for a new training program to support early career faculty in the communication of their ideas and research, including the development and design of training materials and presentations needed to execute workshops and seminars
• Assist in developing branding materials for individual research labs or centers of excellence by collaborating with other creative professionals to create visual markers, graphics, and website content, visually representing abstract research concepts
