Department Overview:

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at UW-Madison is at the forefront of cutting-edge research aimed at understanding and treating vision-related disease. Our team studies the aging process and how it relates to senses (smell, vision, hearing), behavior, and health in dog and humans.

Schedule:

Flexible schedule with approximately 2-8 hours per week on various weekdays, and occasional optional Sundays, to accommodate experimental needs and student availability. This is an ideal role for students seeking a paid, hands-on research opportunity alongside their academic commitments. We are ideally seeking a student who has some availability through the summer of 2025.

Qualifications:

Current UW-Madison undergraduate student.
Interest in biomedical research, particularly in aging, animal behavior, vision sciences, or related fields.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Comfortable working with and learning basic laboratory techniques.
Prior laboratory experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Basic understanding of biological and experimental procedures.
Ability to accurately record and organize data.
Willingness to learn new skills such as laboratory techniques and animal behavior analysis.
Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.
Good communication and teamwork skills.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Undergraduate Research Assistant will contribute to projects investigating dog health and behavior. The main responsibilities include:

Training in basic laboratory safety and techniques, and human subjects research
Handling chemicals, measuring and pipetting samples
Preparation of materials used for olfactory testing in dogs
Preparation of supplies and materials for dog health and behavior analysis
Dissemination of surveys about dog health to dog owners, data entry

Additional opportunities may arise depending on your skills, time management, and enthusiasm for the field.

Physical Demands:

Ability to perform tasks that require repetitive motion and precision.
Ability to lift and move laboratory supplies (up to 5 pounds)
