Department Overview:
The Experimental Fermentation Lab (EFL) in the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC). The central goals of the EFL are to provide support for GLBRC research activities by providing various materials such as biomass hydrolysates, microbial growth media, technical expertise for fermentation experiments, as well as performing aqueous ammonia pretreatment, hydrolysis, and small-scale fermentations to study variability in biomass feedstocks. https://www.glbrc.org/

Qualifications:
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student in STEM major. Highly organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently in a laboratory environment. Laboratory experience preferred but not necessary.

Willingness to learn and work at the laboratory bench Curiosity about enzymes, microbiology and fermentation Adaptability to new tasks and learning opportunities Attention to Detail Team focused Comfortable working with plant biomass, chemicals and microbial samples
Position Summary/Job Duties:
Tasks include routine handing of plant biomass samples, cataloging and managing pretreated biomass using GLBRC’s data catalog Carry-out biomass pretreatment experiments -> set-up, execution and clean-up Assist other EFL personnel in preparing microbial media, reagents, and supplies as well as organization and maintenance of the lab This position also includes opportunities to cross-train and work with other sections within EFL.
Physical Demands:
Occasional lifting or carrying of study materials. Work with plant biomass and other dusty materials. Ability to sit, stand, and move within a laboratory setting for extended periods. Work with chemicals and microbial samples
