Department Overview:
Memorial Library's Access Services is the face of Memorial Library. We are responsible for many of its daily functions and basic department services. Providing great service to students, faculty, and staff is a key part of this job, so Student Assistants are expected to be approachable, knowledgeable, and collaborative at all times. Student Assistants are responsible for welcoming patrons to the library, answering basic questions, and helping direct them to the appropriate resources. This requires attention-to-detail, the ability to accomplish tasks in a self-directed manner, and a willingness to ask questions when instructions are unclear.

September 2025 (with the option to train and work as soon as May 2025)

Students would be eligible to continue working as long as they are enrolled at UW Madison

Schedule:
Flexible. Includes mornings, evenings, and weekends during Memorial Library's open hours (https://www.library.wisc.edu/memorial/about-memorial/library-hours/). Work schedules are set for the entire semester, and will change each semester. Work is available over breaks (spring break, winter interim), excluding legal holidays

Position Summary/Job Duties:
- Enforcing entrance policy and procedures - Greeting and orienting users as they enter the building - Checking out materials to patrons - Processing items returned to the library, including routing books to other departments and libraries - Retrieving items from a hold shelf - Shelving and sorting books - Assisting patrons face-to-face in using library resources - Assisting patrons over the phone - Assisting with building emergency and safety procedures - Other tasks as assigned
Physical Demands:
This position requires long periods of sitting and using a computer, moving and bending while shelving books, and some periods of walking around the building to assist patrons when necessary. Physical accommodations may be provided if requested.
