Department Overview:

The Chazen Museum of Art collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits works of art and presents related educational programs in support of the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The Chazen does this because the visual arts enrich individual human experience and because knowledge of art is essential to understanding diverse cultures, past and present.

Schedule:

• 20–40 hours per week, depending on availability.
• Scheduled hours will fall during the Chazen's opening hours: from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on weekdays, and from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends.
• Option to continue into the fall semester (wage increases to $15.61).

Qualifications:

Must be a student currently enrolled at UW–Madison. Students graduating May 2025 are only eligible if they are returning to UW–Madison this fall for graduate school, and/or are taking summer courses at UW–Madison.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Experience and enthusiasm for working closely with members of the public across communities and identities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact comfortably with everyone is a must!
• Dependability and professionalism.
• Flexible availability (some evenings, and one weekend day per week, will likely be required).
• Arts, education, or nonprofit experience preferred.
• Bilingual ability a plus.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

This public-facing position is responsible for establishing the initial interaction with visitors to the Chazen Museum of Art. Visitor Services Assistants work closely with the Visitor Services Manager, helping carry out the Chazen's mission by ensuring visitors across communities and identities feel welcomed, supported, and informed of all museum resources available to them, as well as by stewarding the safety of artworks in our galleries.

Provide primary visitor services:
• Welcome visitors on entry and provide information regarding the Chazen's layout, collections, exhibitions, and events.
• Greet groups as they arrive and assist with stowing their belongings.
• Assist visitors with donations and memberships.
• Reinforce museum policies regarding food, bags, safety, etc.
• Help visitors with larger Madison-based inquiries and wayfinding as needed.
• Complete routine upkeep tasks for temporary exhibitions as applicable.
• Provide supplementary support to assist visitors in the event of an emergency.
• Provide occasional staffing and logistical support for public programs.

Provide operations evaluation and museum security support:
• Monitor galleries, enforce security policies, and communicate effectively with security officers and other staff to ensure safety of visitors and artwork.
• Submit reports as needed to the Visitor Services Manager regarding incidents, questions, and visitor issues.
• Complete regular gallery inventories and other security-related tasks as directed.
• Assist with opening and closing procedures as needed.

Administrative duties as needed:
• Refill stocks of pamphlets, maps, and brochures at the Visitor Services desk.
• Prepare mailings and event materials.
• Enter attendance data.
• Assist with administering surveys.

Physical Demands:

The Visitor Services Assistant typically performs such physical activities as moving through the gallery spaces and sitting at the Visitor Services desk (approximately 50% each), and occasionally pushing carts.
