Department Overview:
As one of the largest departments on campus, the Department of Mathematics includes 59 Faculty, 23 Academic Staff, 7 University Staff, and numerous temporary instructional staff. The Math Learning Center, housed within the Math Department, is dedicated to fostering academic success. We provide a supportive and inclusive environment for students seeking academic assistance with undergraduate mathematics courses.

Qualifications:
Required: • Current undergraduate student, enrolled at UW-Madison with overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. • Desire to help students succeed in an equitable, collaborative environment. • Earned A or AB in Math 221 (AP, CLEP or transfer credit is okay) OR Earned A in Math 112, Math 113, or Math 114 • Previous experience helping students with mathematics. Preferred: • A or AB in a calculus-level course. • Previous tutoring experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
• Strong content knowledge at the precalculus (algebra and trigonometry) level. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Reliable and punctual. • Ability to explain complex ideas effectively, using different approaches as needed. • Eagerness to learn best practices for mathematics instruction and tutoring. • Willingness to support students in their development of study and test-taking skills. • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion working with students. Position Summary/Job Duties:
As a Math Learning Center Classroom Peer Mentor, you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on students' lives by providing high-quality academic support for students with their mathematics coursework. MLC Classroom Peer Mentors are assigned to two or three sections of the following precalculus-level courses: Math 096, 112, 113, or 141. Tutors in this role must attend all class meetings for the course(s) to which they are assigned. Classroom Peer Mentors provide support for the students enrolled in the course during classtime, typically during group work class activities. They must be outgoing and comfortable reaching out to students even if they are not actively seeking help. We seek patient, supportive “teachers” who enjoy precalculus-level topics and can break down ideas simply for students. Job Duties will include: • Attending all classes for the course(s) assigned. [Peer Mentors are expected to take two course assignments (though these could be two sections of the same course) totaling 6 hours per week. Peer Mentors will be able to request courses that fit their existing schedules.] • Providing academic support for group work activities during class meetings. • Explaining mathematical concepts in a clear and understandable manner. • Fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and motivating learning environment. • Arriving on-time or early for scheduled shifts. • Collaborating with other team members to ensure the smooth operation of the MLC. • Following all MLC policies and procedures as outlined in the MLC Handbook. • Additional duties as required depending on your particular MLC tutor assignment. • Participating in approximately 6 hours of professional develpment throughout the semester. Note: Peer Mentors will be expected to attend training events on Thursday, 8/28/25 [~12-2pm] and on Tuesday, 9/2/25 [~12-4pm].
Physical Demands:
Must be able to read students’ work and communicate verbally and in writing with other team members and students.
