Department Overview:

The UW–Madison Biotechnology Center supports cutting-edge research by providing advanced technologies, expertise, and services to scientists across campus. Students working with us gain hands-on experience in a professional environment at the intersection of research and technology.

Schedule:

Schedule is flexible, but working hours are between 8AM and 5PM, Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend hours may be required, but rarely.

Qualifications:

Required

Must be a currently enrolled UW–Madison student in good academic standing.
Basic knowledge of computer systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Familiarity with the Linux command line for basic navigation and file management.
Exposure to Python through coursework, projects, or self-study.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to follow technical instructions and documented procedures.
Dependable, detail-oriented, and professional.

Preferred

Experience managing or editing websites using WordPress.
Basic understanding of HTML and CSS for web content editing.
Exposure to Bash scripting or Linux system administration tasks (e.g., user management, file permissions).
Interest in working in a research, academic, or scientific environment.
Willingness to learn additional tools such as Globus or Salesforce if needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required Skills & Knowledge

Basic understanding of computer hardware, operating systems (Windows, macOS, and/or Linux), and networking concepts.
Understanding of basic HTML and CSS.
Familiarity with Linux command-line interface and general system navigation.
Experience with Python for scripting or coursework projects.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Dependability, attention to detail, and ability to follow documentation and procedures.

Desirable (but not required) Experience

Experience with Bash scripting or command-line tools.
Experience using WordPress to create or edit web content.
Exposure to JavaScript or PHP.
Exposure to basic system administration tasks (e.g., file permissions, SSH, user management).
Comfort working in a lab/research environment with scientists and technical staff.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

General IT Support

Provide first-level support for staff and lab users, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues.
Set up and maintain workstations (Windows, macOS, and Linux), including imaging, software installation, and user configuration.
Assist with printer and peripheral device setup and maintenance.

Web and Content Support
Maintain and update website content using WordPress, including pages, posts, menus, and media.
Make basic HTML/CSS changes as needed to improve page layout or functionality.
Assist with small web development tasks or enhancements (e.g., editing themes, plugins, or scripts under supervision).
Help ensure web content is accessible, well-structured, and up to date.

Linux System Support
Perform basic Linux administration tasks, such as user account management, file permission adjustments, and routine system monitoring.
Assist in updating and patching Linux systems under supervision.
Help with data management on networked storage systems (e.g., copying, organizing, verifying integrity).

Python and Scripting Tasks
Write or modify simple Python scripts for automation or reporting tasks.
Assist in testing and debugging internal Python utilities.
Help document script usage and create basic user guides.

Inventory and Documentation
Track IT hardware inventory and maintain records of deployed equipment.
Update internal documentation related to system configurations, procedures, and support resolutions.

Other Duties as Assigned
Participate in IT projects such as lab computer upgrades, server maintenance windows, or internal tool development.
Learn and assist with Globus, Salesforce, and other center-specific systems if applicable.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. safely.
