Department Overview:

Headquartered in the Discovery Building at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tiny Earth is a dynamic, international network of college instructors and students focused on crowdsourcing antibiotic discovery from soil bacteria. We support equitable access to education, data-driven research, global health, and environmental protection through faculty education, student research, and community engagement. We are committed to expanding diversity in science and creating inclusive learning experiences to support it. More than 800+ college instructors who teach Tiny Earth to 16,000+ students in 33 countries comprise the Tiny Earth network, with 80 instructors at 47 colleges in Wisconsin.

General business hours are 8:30am-5:00pm CT Mon-Fri. Student schedules vary based on the number of hours. We will accommodate class schedules.

Qualifications:

Experience with and demonstrated skill in:
● Writing (e.g., web content, news stories, feature articles).
● Creating visual media (e.g., photo, video, graphics, images)
● Using digital communication tools (e.g., email campaigns, website builders, social media platforms)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Required:
● Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
● Ability to write clearly, self-edit, and proofread.
● Attention to detail.
● Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and anticipate needs.
● Willingness to learn new skills and tools.
● Comfort in exercising independent judgment and seeking clarification when appropriate.
● Good time management skills, with the ability to track multiple projects and due dates.
● Desire to problem-solve and creatively navigate solutions

Preferred:
● A creative candidate with cultural awareness, humility, responsiveness. Interest in working with a large network of faculty, students, and communities.
● Coursework in communications.
● We use the following digital tools regularly: Web conferencing (Zoom), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Presentations, Drive, Forms, Teams), Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), social media platforms (Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, LinkedIn, Slack), survey tools (Qualtrics), email campaigns (MailChimp), graphics design (Adobe, Canva), and websites (WordPress, GitHub). Experience with all of these tools is not required, but we do ask that the candidate is eager and able to learn them.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Communications and Media Intern will support communications and digital media for the Tiny Earth network with roles such as:
● Produce regular newsletters
● Write, edit, and post web content
● Maintain websites
● Design templates for presentations
● Coordinate social media presence
● Create visual media content
The Intern will also provide support for Tiny Earth events and contribute to general administrative tasks as needed.

Physical Demands:

Ability to work with a computer.
