Department Overview:

The discipline of genetics centers on the study of the mechanisms of inheritance and the outward manifestation of the hereditary material. Reflecting the wide scope of the discipline of genetics in the biological sciences, research in the Laboratory of Genetics spans a broad range of topics, from the molecular and cellular to organismal and population levels. In our unit, you will find this wide breadth of work, from innovative technologies for genetic and genomic analysis of gene variants in humans, to studies that aim to determine basic mechanisms of development, disease, and evolutionary processes, and many other areas of discovery. Genetics pervasively reaches subjects applicable to our basic understanding of biology and the biomedical sciences, and their application to fields of agriculture, bioenergy, ecosystems and human health. Schedule:

The bulk of the work will need to be completed in blocks of approximately 4 to 5 hours, while the remainder may be done in smaller chunks. Timing is flexible, but communication is vital.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Primary duty will be making fly food. Some cleaning will also be required. You will be taught and guided the first couple of times. You will also be given a protocol to follow.

The process of making fly food is not short. Food is made in big batches one day, and bagged the next day to prevent more drying. Food making can take around 4-5 hours the first day, depending on how much is being made. Bagging will not take more than 15 minutes and needs to be completed the next day.

How often you decide to make food is up to your availability and lab demand. The lab has a document to keep track of that. Schedule can be flexible but good communication is required!

This is NOT a research position.
