Department Overview:

The La Follette School of Public Affairs is highly ranked among graduate degree public policy programs and enjoys a worldwide reputation for research and teaching. Our mission is to train leaders and to conduct research to inspire evidence-based policymaking to achieve the public good. Our department’s academic programs include options for pursuing a master’s degree through the 2-year program, accelerated program, combined degree, double degree, or dual degree, as well as two undergraduate certificate programs in health policy and public policy.

Schedule:

Consistent, but flexible schedule of 8-12 hours a week (Monday-Friday). There may be times throughout the year that may require this employee to work more hours during a week due to special events.

Qualifications:

- Must be enrolled in a master’s program at UW-Madison.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Motivated and able to contribute to a warm and welcoming environment for current and prospective students.
- Work well and learn in a fast-paced environment, as well as adapt and problem solve in the moment
- Proven technical expertise in working with the Microsoft Office suite of products as well as Google
- Strong attention to detail
- Confident public speaker
- Efficient time management skills
- Driven to achieve individual and departmental goals
- Commitment to respecting the privacy of students’ education records and supporting the principles of FERPA
- A passion for helping others achieve their educational and career goals
- Experience working with students from different cultural backgrounds and lived experiences

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Experience working in higher education (advising, financial aid, admissions, counselor education)

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Our graduate team is comprised of three full-time staff members who manage admissions, recruitment, enrollment, advising, and data requests for our graduate programs. They are a dynamic team committed to student success and fostering the development of future public policy and higher education professionals.

Description & Responsibilities:

The Graduate Program Student Ambassador would support their efforts and will have the opportunity to gain experience in graduate recruitment and peer admissions advising.

Responsibilities would include:
- Serve as a graduate ambassador to prospective and admitted students by:
- Responding to requests for information in our admissions email account
- Assisting with campus visits by leading tours, answering questions, and providing a student point of view
- Meeting with prospective and admitted students during scheduled “virtual office hours”
- Assist with graduate recruitment activities and special programming: Possibilities include attending Visit Day, Virtual Visit Day, virtual info sessions, graduate school fairs and other tabling events 
- Create social media content to tell La Follette School grad student stories that connect with prospective students
- Contribute information and ideas for Graduate School recruitment
- Generate ideas for new ways to reach prospective students
- Review prospective and admitted student Canvas sites to ensure content is accurate and current
- Coordinate occasional student gatherings such as the Accelerated student event
- Provide support, ensuring a smooth program delivery by anticipating problems, finding solutions and being organized

This position will be primarily in-person with some potential for remote work eligibility and may be required to travel for recruitment activities, as needed.
