Department Overview:
The Center for Limnology (CFL) at UW–Madison is a leading hub for freshwater research, education, and outreach. Home to the North Temperate Lakes LTER site, the CFL conducts long-term ecological studies on Wisconsin’s lakes, contributing to a national network of NSF-supported research. Our interdisciplinary team of scientists, students, and staff works to understand aquatic ecosystems and inform sustainable management practices. We foster a collaborative, inclusive environment where students can engage in meaningful research and develop valuable scientific skills.

Qualifications:
-Careful attention to detail and established protocols to maintain the high quality of our long term database -Work outdoors in any weather -Be physically able to lift and carry a moderate amount of gear over short distances -Self-motivated and able to work with a partner in the field -Valid driver’s license which meets UW Risk Management standards is required (https://businessservices.wisc.edu/managing-risk/driver-authorization-and-insurance/driver-authorization/)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
-Ability to follow detailed scientific protocols with accuracy and consistency -Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions -Physically able to lift and carry moderate field equipment over short distances -Strong sense of initiative and reliability; able to work independently and with a partner -Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation -Valid driver’s license meeting UW Risk Management standards -Interest in ecology, environmental science, or field research is a plus
Position Summary/Job Duties:
This position is part of the North Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research (NTL LTER) project. We study the ecology of lakes as one of a network of sites established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support long-term ecological research. The Base Crew positions collect limnological data from our four study lakes and do the associated lab analyses and data entry. This work will provide opportunities to get out on the lakes during the school year, with potential to learn about other projects happening in the Center for Limnology (https://lter.limnology.wisc.edu/).
