Department Overview:

The Harlow Center for Biological Psychology is a renowned research facility at UW–Madison dedicated to the study of primate behavior, neuroscience, and psychological development. Named after pioneering psychologist Harry Harlow, the center continues his legacy by conducting innovative research on cognition, emotion, and social behavior in nonhuman primates. Our interdisciplinary team of scientists, students, and staff fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment where undergraduates can gain valuable experience in behavioral research and animal care.

Semi-Flexible; We are looking for students who will be available on Sundays 9am – 4pm at least 2-3 weeks per month and potentially some weekdays for up to 12 hours per week.

Qualifications:

-Current UW-Madison undergraduate student, ideally Freshman or Sophomore status. Interest in primates, animal care, behavior, psychology
-Comfortable working in animal research center Responsible, consistent, and organized
-Good capacity to assess gaps in one's own knowledge and abilities Intellectual curiosity and ability to ask questions
-Ability to take initiative when needed Problem solving and analytical skills
-Ability to work with others, communicate and cooperate well Able to perform tedious tasks carefully
-Meticulous, good attention to detail
-Bulk food preparation experiences useful
-Experience in a laboratory animal research facility, veterinary clinic or accredited zoo environment beneficial, but not required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-Must be a current UW–Madison undergraduate student (Freshman or Sophomore preferred)
-Interest in psychology, animal behavior, or biological research
-Comfortable working in an animal research setting and with nonhuman primates
-Responsible, reliable, and organized with strong attention to detail
-Ability to perform repetitive or tedious tasks with care and consistency
-Good communication and teamwork skills
-Intellectual curiosity and willingness to ask questions and learn
-Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks (e.g., standing, bending, reaching)
-Experience in food prep, veterinary clinics, zoos, or research labs is helpful but not required
-Must be TB negative and meet measles immunity documentation requirements
-Weekend and holiday availability required

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Assist Research Specialist with all duties specific to Animal Enrichment Program.

Essential Responsibilities:
-10% Inventories, cleans, and maintains organization of supplies, foods, and storage areas
-70% Assists with preparing and cleaning food and toys according to established schedules and specifications
-20% Assists faculty and staff with general office work and record-keeping

Additional Information:
Students will work with our training unit and experienced staff to learn the tasks to be performed, including but not limited to handling and preparing fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, cleaning toys, cleaning and organizing food and toy storage spaces, assisting with inventory and equipment maintenance. Depending on research needs and student availability, student may assist faculty or staff in data entry and office tasks. If performance is exemplary, there are many opportunities for conducting research, including learning about primate behavior and performing analysis of different forms of environmental enrichment. Careful work must be demonstrated first.

Physical Demands:

-Employee must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates and with wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).
-Must be TB negative.
-Employee will be required to provide written documentation to University Health Services showing one of the following: 1) receipt of measles vaccination; 2) laboratory evidence of immunity to measles; or 3) laboratory confirmation of measles disease.
-Individuals without the aforementioned documentation will need to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, may need to be immunized.
-With or without accommodation an employee must be able to consistently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, sometimes at shoulder level; must be able to stand, stoop, reach, bend, etc.
-Will use basic food preparation equipment Weekend and holiday work is required.
