Department Overview:

The SBDC is an outreach education program serving small businesses in the community. The program is located in Grainger Hall in the Wisconsin School of Business. The SBDC provides confidential consulting and non-credit education programs to the public at large. This part-time position is responsible for providing administrative support in the areas of marketing and event planning/coordination. This position is administrative in nature and does not work directly with small business clients.

Schedule:

• The position will begin in January 2026 and continue through the end of the semester for an average 8-15 hours per week.
• Work will begin in-person, with the possibility of remote work after initial onboarding and early job success. There may also be opportunity to continue for additional semester(s).
• Preference will be given to students who are able to provide some administrative support during UW-Madison academic breaks (in particular, winter break and summer break), as much of the class set-up and marketing work takes place while gearing up for the start of the academic semester. Once the student has enough experience in the office, work during breaks can be completed remotely.
• Training will be provided to support intern(s) in both job function and professional development.

Qualifications:

• Full-time undergraduate-student status for the spring 2026 semester
• Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative where appropriate
• Must demonstrate exceptional visual and written communication skills
• We are a small and collaborative office, so flexibility and adaptability is a must
• Organized, detail-oriented, dependable, self-starter who can focus, work efficiently, and be able to solve problems independently when given general parameters/guidelines.
• Due to the public-facing work and small staff size of the office, student staff must show professionalism, demonstrate flexibility in job duties, maintain a positive attitude, and have personal awareness in a shared office space.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position is well-suited for students interested in an administrative work environment. This position does not typically interface directly with entrepreneurial clients; however, the SBDC is a public-facing office, and student staff must have professional conduct in an office environment.
The most qualified applicants are strong verbal and written communicators, have an ability to work independently, desire to learn quickly, and commitment to adhere to confidentiality/privacy guidelines is essential. Technical skills needed include:
• Experience with branding and graphic design principles and the ability to show sample design projects/portfolio (materials created for classes are OK)
• Familiarity with (or willingness and ability to self-learn) Adobe Express for social media, layouts, etc.
• Strong visual communication skills.
• Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication trends.
• Ability to write in a variety of formats (i.e., social media, website copy, newsletter edits, etc.)
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Possible key projects include:
o Developing timely and evergreen SBDC social media content and images
o Assisting with transitioning SBDC website to new WiscWeb 2.0 platform
• Support office marketing needs, including:
o Update SBDC website to ensure content is current, links are correct, etc.
o Use existing newsletter and promotional email templates to send class promotion emails
o Design social media and/or website graphics
o Write social media posts, following SBDC brand voice and topics
o Ensure all design and communication materials adhere to both the SBDC and Wisconsin School of Business brand guidelines.
o Help maintain and organize visual assets and content library.
• Administrative support as needed, including tasks like:
• Supporting class administrative work
• Communicate effectively with supervisor to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality work within deadlines.
• Other duties as assigned (may include support of SBDC class preparation, data entry, etc.)

POSITION NOTES:

Physical Demands:

Student staff may need to provide minor physical support – carrying materials less than 30 pounds, setting up signage or other class materials, picking up materials from our registration office, etc.
