Department Overview:
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) at the University of Wisconsin is a leading clinical department within the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). DFMCH is dedicated to advancing patient care, education, and research. Our 18 clinics provides primary care to over 175,000 patients yielding over 374,000 patient visits annually, and we train more than 150 residents and 300 medical students each year. Qualifications:
Degree in progress required. Preference will be given to candidates majoring in Computer Sciences, Data Science, Statistics, Information Science, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Operations & Technology Management and/or Business Analytics.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Required (baseline): • Strong problem-solving and attention to detail • Ability to learn quickly and take ownership of small projects • Comfort working with data • Clear written communication and documentation habits Preferred (one or more): • Python (pandas), R, or JavaScript/TypeScript • SQL and basic data modeling concepts • Excel power-user skills (Power Query, pivot tables, structured references) • Power Automate, Apps Script, or other automation platforms • Experience with APIs, Git/GitHub, or low-code tools • Interest in responsible AI use (prompting, evaluation, privacy-aware design)
Position Summary/Job Duties:
• Build scalable, maintainable automations to reduce repetitive tasks (data cleanup, reconciliation support, tracking, reporting) • Prototype and improve workflows using AI responsibly (e.g., drafting, classification, extraction from structured sources, QA checks) • Create or enhance dashboards / reports (Excel, Power BI/Tableau, or other tools as appropriate) • Write clear documentation so the team can use and sustain what you build • Collaborate with finance staff to understand requirements, test solutions, and iterate
