Department Overview:
The Arboretum is a University of Wisconsin research and teaching facility, including 1200 acres of prairies, woodlands, savannas, wetlands, gardens, and Lake Wingra shoreline. We restore and manage native ecosystems, conduct restoration ecology research, and provide many learning opportunities for volunteers and visitors. The Assistant Rangers work with the Arboretum Ranger in maintenance, land management, and outreach work.

Schedule:
One weekend shift from 9 am-5 pm. Weekday shifts are flexible based on availability. Average of 20 hours per week during summer/winter break, 12-20 hours per week during semester.

Qualifications:
Must hold a valid driver’s license that meets UW Risk Management standards. Must be an enrolled student for the Fall 2026 semester.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Must be personable, reliable, and able to work well independently. Must interact well with Arboretum visitors. CPR/AED certification preferred, but not required.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
Job duties include: Patrolling our grounds and 17+ miles of trails. Safely use tools (hand saws, loppers, shovels, picks, and brush cutters) to maintain trails and trail structures. Erosion control and trail drainage maintenance. Weekend security and care of the Arboretum Visitor Center. Land management tasks (e.g., monitoring hazards and invasive species). Educating the public through day-to-day interactions with visitors. Install and maintain signs on trails and at trailheads and parking lots. Collecting phenology data and maintaining records. Physical Demands:
Candidates must be willing to do physical work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, year-round. The Arboretum is located 4 miles south of campus and is not on a bus line. Reliable transportation is required.
