Department Overview:

SOAR Graduate Advisors will be trained to work with professional and peer advisors in assigned academic units that advise incoming undergraduate first-year and transfer students at SOAR. Hiring units for SOAR 2025 include: College of Letters and Science (L&S), College of Engineering, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and College of Letters and Science - Honors. Schedule:

SOAR Graduate Advisors will be advising in-person 15-25 hours each week during SOAR, and up to 40 hours/week during Training - which will be May 18-22 and May 26-28. SOAR advising sessions will take place from May 29 through August 14. At minimum, candidates should be available in-person between 8am-1pm on weekdays during SOAR advising sessions. Additional hours may be offered outside of these times.

SOAR Graduate Advisors are welcome to have other summer obligations if they do not conflict with the SOAR schedule listed above.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $20.00

Qualifications:

Graduate Student status at UW-Madison for Summer 2026 and/or Fall 2026
Bachelor’s degree completed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Interest in working with a diverse undergraduate population, including first-generation, under- represented, new freshmen, and transfer students

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail

A desire to build positive relationships with students.

Experience working with first-year and/or transfer students in a classroom or co-curricular setting is preferred but not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Assist incoming students with their course selection, scheduling, and enrollment

Facilitate discussions with students regarding academic requirements, enrollment tools and systems, and strategies for academic success

Provide referrals to campus resources as needed, including but not limited to Admissions, Financial Aid, Veterans Services, University Housing, Study Abroad and student involvement opportunities

Document advising interactions and track administrative progress for each student advised at SOAR, with individual student follow-up as needed

Complete other responsibilities or projects as assigned
