Department Overview:

The Advising & Career Center (ACC) team are your partners for student services in the School of Human Ecology (SoHE); whether you are a prospective student exploring our majors, a current student navigating curriculum and degree requirements, or planning for your career post-graduation.

Training April with a full schedule start in Fall 2026

Schedule:

4-10 hours a week during the open office hours of 9-4pm, Monday through Friday.

Qualifications:

As the Office Assistant (OA) for SoHE’s ACC, you serve as the first point of contact for current and prospective students, along with community members. Successful candidates are outgoing and kind, willing to answer multiple questions, can adhere to confidentiality/privacy guidelines, and possess a desire to build collaborative relationships with our team of professional advisors. You must be a School of Human Ecology student to apply/be employed with the office.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Interpersonal communication, listening, and strong customer service skills

Ability to think critically in order to solve problems

Experience with, or willingness to learn, Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel

Experience with, or willingness to learn, professional email communication skills

High attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks and problem solve in the moment

Ability to relate to students from a broad spectrum of cultural, socio-economic, ethnic, and regional backgrounds

A commitment to diversity and building an inclusive SoHE and UW-Madison community

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Provide basic reception duties including managing the email inbox and responding to voicemails
Schedule advising appointments via Starfish
Create visual content for the front lobby and video board using design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva or PowerPoint
Plan and execute programs to promote the ACC and build community within SoHE
Provide administrative and project support to professional staff as needed
