Department Overview:

 SuccessWorks is the center for personal and professional development, just for College of Letters & Science students. We connect students with the advisors, alumni, and employers who can help them explore their interests, try out different occupations, and then land the job or internship of their dreams. Our classes teach career skills with SuccessWorks’ support.

 Minimum: 13.3 

Schedule:

 5 hrs/wk: Attending 75-minute lecture and discussion sections
3 hrs/wk: Office hours and lesson prep
1 hr/wk: Attending instructional team meetings (REMOTE)
2 hrs/wk: Grading student assignments

Qualifications:

 Mandatory:
-Graduate student, in good standing at UW–Madison (minimum 3.0 GPA)
-Wireless access to email, Canvas, and Zoom (personal laptop/tablet required)
-Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts and sciences field

Preferred:
-Enrolled in a graduate program outside the College of Letters and Science
-Professional work experience outside academia
-Experience teaching or facilitating college-level discussions and classroom activities
-Writing experience of any kind

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-Ability to articulate the benefit of a liberal arts and sciences education for career success
-Appreciation of the diverse backgrounds, needs, and goals of UW-Madison undergraduates across a wide variety of programs and majors
-Familiarity with student advising and/or career development
-Skilled in public speaking and classroom management
-Knowledge of how to give effective feedback

Position Summary/Job Duties:

-Lead 2 discussion sections of up to 18 students each (up to 36 students total)
---Discussion sections meet on Thursdays at 9:30, 11:00, 2:30, and 4:00
---Lecture meets Tuesdays at 2:30
-Prepare lesson plans
-Deliver classroom instruction
-Grade student assignments within 1 week of submission
-Hold regular office hours (by Zoom if desired)
-Respond to student communication within 2 business days
-Monitor student progress and seek support as needed
-Manage guest speaker visits as necessary
-Contribute to ongoing course development and program assessment
-New TAs must attend several training workshops before the semester begins

NOTE: All course materials, assignments, and guest visits are provided by the Career Education Instructor, who supervises the course. TAs adapt these materials as needed.

NOTE: This position generally generally qualifies for health benefits and tuition remission. However, tuition remission is not available for graduate students enrolled in programs with service-based pricing tuition (see https://policy.wisc.edu/library/UW-1029).
