Department Overview:
The Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives within the Division of Teaching and Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides culturally relevant and transformative arts programming to promote positive social dialogue and to give cultural art forms a legitimate academic forum. By harnessing the broad cultural influence of spoken word, hip hop and emerging as well as traditional art forms, OMAI's events and programming create learning environments that directly affect UW-Madison's campus climate, improving retention and graduation success, preparing future leaders to reinvest in their communities. By continually refreshing this paradigm that integrates traditional academics and cutting edge arts activism, OMAI empowers transnational leaders with new tools for inclusive community building. One of OMAI's most prominent initiatives is the First Wave Hip Hop and Urban Arts Scholarship Program, a cutting-edge multicultural artistic program for incoming students which offers a four-year full tuition scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bringing together young artists and leaders from across the United States and beyond, First Wave offers students the opportunity to live, study and create together in a close-knit, dynamic campus community. First Wave is the first university program in the country to offer four-year full tuition scholarships for urban arts, spoken word and hip-hop culture. The First Wave Graduate Mentor will work with OMAI’s Associate Director, and FW Academic Advisor to review and develop course curriculum and provide academic support and resources for first-year First Wave Scholars, as well as one-on-one mentorship meetings with the first-year cohort (no more than 15 students). Additionally, this position may be asked to support the staff during program events.

Schedule:
Scheduling of 20 hours per week is flexible between the office hours of 10am-6pm. FW Foundations course scheduled for Fall 2026 on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm. Occasional hours on nights and evenings to support OMAI events as needed.

Qualifications:
Education: • REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree • PREFERRED: In a field of arts, education, or leadership development Required Qualifications: • UW Graduate Student Status (enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours) for the duration of the appointment, starting Fall 2026 semester. • Candidate must be able to work in person during the 2026-2027 academic year and for the duration of their employment in this role. • Candidate may occasionally work some weekend hours for special events and campus visits
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience teaching or facilitating small and large group discussions • Experience working with first-year college students, first generation, low-income and/or underrepresented students • Knowledge of topics related to first-year student experiences and resources for transitioning to college • Knowledge and/or experience with Canvas or related instructional technology (preferred)

The OMAI Graduate Mentor (First Year Scholars) is a graduate student at UW-Madison who has interest in creating, cultivating, and executing student support services, one-on-one mentorship undergraduate students of diverse identities, and instructing a first year seminar to develop skills for academic success. The Graduate Mentor is generally responsible for the execution of one-on-one mentorship and instructing the “First Wave Foundations” first-year seminar in partnership with the OMAI student-support staff. The First Wave Graduate Mentor (First Years) will work with OMAI’s Associate Director, and FW Academic Advisor to review and develop course curriculum and provide academic support and resources for first-year First Wave Scholars, as well as one-on-one mentorship meetings with the first-year cohort (no more than 15 students). Additionally, this position may be asked to support the staff during program events. Please provide examples or share an experience that highlights how your interests align with the three program pillars. • Please note that successful applicants are responsible for ensuring their eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without need of employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment.
