Department Overview:

The Office of Communications and Advancement (C&A) within the UW–Madison School of Education is an integrated and collaborative unit that helps increase awareness and visibility of faculty and staff, students, departments, academic programs, and service units through a range of communications and marketing efforts. The office also serves and engages with students, alumni, and friends, builds and nurtures internal and external relationships, and develops and enhances lifelong philanthropic relationships. Qualifications:

Current UW–Madison undergraduate student; preference for candidates who may be able to continue in the role for more than one academic year.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

We are looking for a student who:
-has strong writing skills, some experience with editing, an eye for detail, and the ability to spot spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
-is able to learn and apply the School of Education’s editorial voice and style
-is interested in writing both short news posts and longer stories, developing ideas from draft to publication
-has — or is eager to develop — interviewing skills, including reaching out to faculty, staff, students, and alumni to gather information about their work
-is comfortable asking questions, offering suggestions, and applying feedback
-is familiar with, or willing to learn, Google Docs/Sheets, Microsoft Word/Excel, WordPress, and Associated Press (AP) style
-enjoys working both independently and as part of a team
-strives to produce high-quality work

Position Summary/Job Duties:

As a valued member of our communications team, you’ll gain hands-on experience developing clear, engaging content and sharpen your ability to research, interview, write, and edit stories for both online and print publications. Specific duties will include:
-writing, editing, and publishing news stories that highlight work across the arts, health, and education to be shared through the School of Education’s website, e-newsletters, and print publications;
-developing and reporting longer-form articles for the School’s print and online magazine and newsletters;
-supporting the School’s social media, public relations, and email marketing efforts;
assisting with additional efforts related to communicating about School of Education programs and events;
-helping, as needed, with setting up and staffing occasional events and with miscellaneous office tasks.
