Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a full-service laboratory providing testing to the companion, exotic animal, and bull stud industries across the United States and Canada. We work closely with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) under the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD).

Qualifications:

Must be a current student and available for in-person work. Preference will be given to those who have more availability.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Skills in data organization, adaptability to new tasks and learning opportunities. Highly organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently. Customer service skills a plus.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

As a receptionist at the WVDL, your main job duties will be greeting visitors and answering our main phone line. Visitors can be maintenance workers, veterinary students, food deliverers, farmers, or veterinarians. Our lab is very secure, so we’ll teach you how to guide each visitor to follow our protocol (sign in, park in the appropriate spot, gain access to lab space through an approved employee, etc.). Phone calls come from a similar array of people: pet owners, veterinarians, vet techs, solicitors, police departments, etc. We’ll teach you how to best direct each of these calls to the right staff member. You’ll also learn how to search our data system so that you can find the information you and the caller need. It’s a nuanced position, and we’re looking for an energetic and professional person to fill this role. We hope that person is you!

Physical Demands:

Ability to remain seated for extended periods. Frequent use of a computer, including viewing screens and entering data via keyboard and mouse. Ability to communicate effectively by telephone.
