Department Overview:

 The Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is looking to connect interns with meaningful open-source projects as part of a new cohort of the internship program in collaboration with Madison College. During the internship, students will join a mentored open source project, participate in an initial training session, and weekly check-ins with the Open Source Program Office, and learn crucial skills related to managing open source software projects and growing software user communities.

Schedule:

 Internship work schedules will be established in collaboration with the project mentors, with a general expected commitment of 10-15 hours/week. In addition to the work schedule established with the project lead, interns will participate in a weekly group session with the OSPO for check-ins, trainings, and guest speakers.

Qualifications:

 UW-Madison and Madison College undergraduate and graduate students with applicable backgrounds in any field are eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in a degree program during the calendar year with at least one semester remaining after the internship’s conclusion.

- A one-page cover letter that highlights your qualifications based on skills identified in the project listing and your interest in open source broadly.
- A resume that includes your name, school email address, phone number, field(s) of study (major, minor, degree, certificate), relevant coursework, extracurricular activities, expected graduation date, relevant sample work (ex: GitHub link, personal website, etc.) and any relevant work or research experience.
-The names and contact information of three references.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Prospective interns should have strong organizational and communication skills, as well as an interest and basic background in project and process management. They should be comfortable writing in Markdown. While interns will not directly develop games, we strongly recommend a basic background in game development, as interns will be working to understand and support game development processes. Basic knowledge of C# and/or JavaScript are recommended but not required.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Open Game Data is an open research infrastructure that serves researchers and game developers, providing a sustainable technical infrastructure for collection and sharing of game telemetry data, as well as downstream data analysis. It is primarily developed by Field Day Lab, which is part of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research within the School of Education. After several years of development within Field Day, we are actively working to build up a community of game studios and researchers, who use shared standards and tools to advance the field of video games for education. Our immediate goals are centered on improving the tools and documentation for onboarding new studios and game producers into the organization, as well as integrating their games with our infrastructure.

Community Support & Development: prospective interns for this project will help to advance Open Game Data's goals for community engagement and development. They will compile documentation of the process for integrating games with OGD's data pipeline, and support our game studio partners through that process. They will also work closely with OGD's communications team, helping to build relationships with prospective and existing community members in their use of Open Game Data tools and services. This community development work will help to build the social connections that ensure our project's long-term sustainability, and interns' insights will help refine our integration process and community engagement strategy.

Physical Demands:

Interns are expected to be able to sit for extended periods. Specific physical demands will be discussed with mentors during the interview process.
