Department Overview:

 First-Generation and Limited-Income (FGLI) Services is a central hub for connection, support, and success for students who are the first in their families to attend college or come from limited-income backgrounds. The office provides a welcoming space where students can build community, explore campus opportunities, and access resources designed specifically for first-generation and limited-income Badgers.

Schedule:

 The internships are for the 2026-2027 academic year. The expected paid time for related work is between 5-10 hours a week, depending on programming needs during the academic semester.

Qualifications:

 - Currently enrolled student in good academic standing
- Ability to make a commitment for the academic year
- Understanding of and commitment to student development ideas and student engagement on college campuses.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Experience in and exposure to peer leadership and facilitation (via coursework, scholarship, campus or community engagement, etc.)
- Ability to build respectful and collaborative relationships with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, academic interests, and campus communities.
- Strong interpersonal and written communications skills
- Interest or experience in program assessment and evaluation
- Experience working with presentation software (e.g. Canva, Google Slides, Power Point, Outlook Calendar, etc.)
- Ability to work collaboratively with other interns and staff
- Ability to work independently and balance multiple responsibilities and tasks at once
- Experience with or interest in learning about and supporting first-generation and limited-income student communities and their allies at UW-Madison

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Community Engagement Interns work with professional staff to support First-Generation and Limited-Income Services efforts to build community, create opportunities for engagement, and provide resources for first-generation and limited-income students.
- Attend 1:1 meetings with direct supervisor, team meetings, intern gatherings, and ongoing, required training (dates will be shared well in advance).
- Plan, develop, and facilitate ongoing programs and events for first-gen and limited-income students and their communities focused on belonging, holistic student support, and celebration of achievements.
- Support programming of the office, such as service-informational workshops or First-Generation graduations or welcome events.
- Assist with assessment for programs and events to gather feedback on student satisfaction, engagement, and learning outcome attainment.
- Help with special projects like FirstGen Friday social media posts and, when approporiate, provide student perspective on office or campus work groups and hiring committees.
