Department Overview:

Cytogenetics/Molecular Department at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH).
The WSLH serves as the public, environmental and occupational health laboratory for the state of Wisconsin, and is part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student
• Strong attention to detail and ability to complete routine tasks accurately
• Reliable, organized, and committed to maintaining a consistent work schedule
• Ability to work independently after training
• Interest in genetics, cytogenetics, molecular biology, or laboratory science preferred
• No prior laboratory experience required
• Preference will be given to students who can commit to one year or longer

• Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The student assistant will support the laboratory with routine organizational, maintenance, and clerical tasks, including:

• Preparing and tracking shipper kits for laboratory send-outs
• Performing slide and general laboratory maintenance
• Printing, scanning, and filing laboratory documents and results
• Assisting with other routine laboratory and clerical tasks as needed
• Following laboratory safety procedures and maintaining an organized work environment

Additional duties may be assigned based on laboratory needs and the student’s training and experience.

Physical Demands:

The position requires the ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
