Course description listed below:

Agriculture branches into nearly every aspect of our daily lives, from the food we eat and the products we use to the natural resources that sustain our communities. In this course, students will explore the interconnected worlds of agricultural sciences, food systems, environmental sustainability, and natural resource management while discovering the many academic pathways and career opportunities available within these fields.

Through engaging discussions, laboratory activities, field-based investigations, and collaborative projects, students will examine the science, technology, and business behind modern agriculture and food production. Students will also investigate how food moves through the complex "farm-to-fork" system and how farmers, scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and communities work together to feed a growing population. Drawing upon programs and research at UW–Madison's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), students will gain insight into university study and careers in areas such as agricultural science, food science, environmental science, sustainability, agricultural engineering, veterinary medicine, agribusiness, conservation, and natural resources. Hands-on experiences may include greenhouse activities, plant and soil investigations, food science experiments, animal care demonstrations, forestry skills, and teamwork-focused challenges.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a foundational understanding of agricultural and food systems, the scientific and societal challenges facing global food production, and the diverse educational pathways and careers that help build a more sustainable future.
