Department Overview:

School of Education Student Services coordinates undergraduate student services for the School. We serve current and prospective School of Education students in all programs, from initial exploration to career goals and beyond. We are the assigned academic advisors for students in all School of Education majors, including health majors (Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Health Equity, Rehab Psych), Education majors (Elementary Ed, Special Ed, Physical Ed, Music Ed, Art Ed, Education Studies), and Arts majors (Theatre and Drama, Art, Dance).

Schedule:

Most work will occur Tuesday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30am and 1pm. Additional hours may be available on Mondays or during weekday afternoons. Exact work hours may vary week to week.

Tentative Training Dates: May 19 - 23 and May 27-29. Approximately 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
SOAR session dates: May 30 – August 15, with the exception of June 30 – July 4.
Virtual dates: July 7-11, July 28-31, August 11-15. Hours TBD but flexible. Work will be able to be done remotely.
*Note: There may be periodic trainings and team meetings throughout the summer after our initial training weeks. There will also be no SOAR sessions the week of June 30 – July 4, and peer advisors will have off.

We may be able to accommodate students with a second job, summer course, or other commitment, but it must not conflict with training or SOAR morning hours. Potential conflicts must be disclosed and approved by the supervisors prior to accepting the employment offer.

Qualifications:

Applicants must:
• Be available to attend interviews and training, and work all SOAR dates (Planned vacations and study abroad experiences cannot conflict with training or SOAR dates)
• Intend to complete a School of Education major
• Have completed two full semesters at UW-Madison by June 1, 2025
• Be a continuing student for the Fall 2025 semester
• Be comfortable using or learning: Canvas, Zoom, MS Teams, and Email
* Due to an HR policy, we can only employ students who will be actively residing in the United States this summer.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

School of Education SOAR peer advisors work independently and collaboratively with professional advising staff to provide new students with an academic orientation to the School of Education (SoE) and UW Madison. This position offers the opportunity to learn more about higher education while gaining interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and presentation skills.

Following an in-depth training period, peer advisors will split their time between direct student contact and completing administrative/logistical tasks to support daily SOAR operations:

• Support new students in individual conversations and small group presentations
• Provide information and answer questions about SoE degree requirements, course selection, and enrollment tools (e.g. Course Search & Enroll, myUW, Student Center)
• Track and document student information and progress in administrative databases
• Share information about co-curricular life and student involvement at UW-Madison
• Participate in ongoing training on academic content and advising skills
• Complete additional projects as assigned to support advising operations

Position Duties:
• Collaborate with fellow peer advisors to present enrollment information to in-person students
• Use counseling techniques to guide conversations
• Share campus resources to facilitate student exploration of academic options on campus, such as the Guide, High Impact Practices (like FIGs), and more
• Teach students how to use enrollment tools
• Assist students in selecting fall courses
• Facilitate virtual small group discussions
• Hold virtual drop-in advising for incoming students about their fall schedules
• Think critically about how students’ intersectional social identities impact their experiences at UW-Madison
• Contribute to day-to-day logistics of SOAR (e.g. respond to student SOAR emails)
• Participate in initial training, ongoing skill development, and regular check-ins throughout SOAR
• Bring energy, enthusiasm, and excitement consistently over the course of the summer

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand or sit for long periods.
Use a (provided) laptop computer, and guide others in doing so.
Ability to communicate fluently in English.
