Department Overview:

The McBurney Center is a team-focused, collaborative environment that provides support services to UW-Madison students with visual, learning, hearing, mobility, and other disabilities. This is a unique position working with Dr. Fielder, scholar of early African American literary studies and a convener for Just Teach One –Early African American Print, (JTO-EAAP) a digital humanities project hosted by the American Antiquarian Society and convened by a team of scholars across institutions. The project’s mission is to create points of access to pre-twentieth-century African American texts to encourage and facilitate instructors to “just teach one” lesser-known early African American text in their courses in the twenty-first century. (JTO-EAAP) is working to appropriately frame and present these critical pieces of African American literature and culture by presenting an easily accessible, high-working with Dr. Fielder, scholar of early African American literary studies and a convener for Just Teach One –Early African American Print, (JTO-EAAP) a digital humanities project hosted by the American Antiquarian Society and convened by a team of scholars across institutions. The project’s mission is to create points of access to pre-twentieth-century African American texts to encourage and facilitate instructors to “just teach one” lesser-known early African American text in their courses in the twenty-first century. (JTO-EAAP) is working to appropriately frame and present these critical pieces of African American literature and culture by presenting an easily accessible, high-quality digital copy of each primary text, pairing contextual information and other apparatus to aid individuals in meeting the challenge of incorporating new curricular materials and facilitate manageable integration into existing courses. The site also provides space for participants in the project to post material tied to their teaching, learning, and scholarship, and in so doing provide the foundation for a dynamic community of dialogue surrounding the shared text. Site features include scholarly introductions and notes, textual transcriptions, historical images and alt text descriptions, and additional teaching materials, and will ultimately incorporate audio recordings of historical texts for accessibility purposes.

Schedule:

Average of 10-15 hours per week. We are looking for candidates that are interested in starting during the Spring 2025 semester and continuing to work over the summer break. Work schedule will be determined in conjunction with Dr. Fielder and the student’s class schedule. Work will mainly be remote work with a few in-person meetings with Dr. Fielder.

• Ability to commit 10 working hours per week
• Experience in web design
• Experience with digital accessibility
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with WordPress is preferable
• Experience with TEI encoding is preferable

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

We are looking for creative students with versatile communication, task management, website design, and technology skills. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. This position does not require extensive experience with digital accessibility but does rely on the ability to quickly learn about creating and checking accessible content.
Familiarity with African American history or Black studies, more generally, is preferable, but not necessary if the candidate has a strong willingness to work with African American texts and histories with respect and responsibility.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

In this position you will be updating and designing a website in WordPress and ensuring digital content is accessible, incorporating new material into the site, and revising the site in consultation with Dr. Fielder.
