Department Overview:

The Office of Student Transition and Family Engagement provides resources and support for students and families as they navigate into and throughout their time at UW-Madison. We have five focus areas within the office: SOAR, Wisconsin Welcome, Wisconsin Experience Seminar (CP 125), Transfer Transition Program, and the Parent and Family Program.

Schedule:

- Fall 2024: ~5-10 hours a week (Determined with position supervisor)
Includes two all SOAR Intern Meeting before winter break

- January 2024: ~5-10 hours/week (Determined with position supervisor) Must be able to work January 9, 10, 13-16 in person for January SOAR

- Spring 2024: ~15 hours per week (based around your class schedule)

- Summer 2025: ~40 hours per week

- Fall 2025: ~5-10 hours if applicable (option to continue employment as an OA if given positive performance review)

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- Full-time undergraduate student enrollment Spring and Fall ‘25.
- Must be in good academic and non-academic standing with the University at the time of application, hire, start of employment, and through the duration of employment. All non-academic misconduct will be reviewed for employment consideration. OSTFE retains the right to check the grade point averages and student conduct during hiring and employment.
- SOAR Operations Interns must abide by all University policies, rules, and regulations at all times throughout employment
- Prior work experience in customer-facing positions
- Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Must be able to work independently and in a team-oriented setting
- Must be able to interact professionally with campus staff

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior involvement in SOAR (i.e. OA, NSL, Peer Advisor, etc.)
- Prior experience with team leadership or community building
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and Google Drive

Position Summary/Job Duties:

SOAR Operations—SOAR Program Functions:
- Oversee the daily operations of the SOAR program and OSTFE office with the Orientation Coordinators. This will include learning how to use specialized software for SOAR to manage operations, aid students in creating a SOAR reservation, help coordinate program logistics, and manage inventory of SOAR materials used on a daily basis.
- Act as the first point of contact to troubleshoot difficult situations with students and their guests

SOAR Operations—Advising Support Functions
- Provide leadership and support for the academic advising functions of SOAR.
This includes trouble-shooting various advising-related situations with students, advisors and campus partners and acting as a liaison between SOAR programming and SOAR advising.

Supervision, Training, and Community Building:
- Help support recruitment efforts to hire a team of Orientation Assistants and New Student Leaders including screening applications and interviewing.
- Lead a team of Orientation Assistants (OAs), the undergraduate student staff who facilitate daily office operations. Interns will assist the Orientation Coordinators with the recruitment, selection, supervision, training, and support of the OA team.
- The SOAR Operations Interns will collaborate with the SOAR Programming Interns to provide training and community-building to undergraduate SOAR staff, implement program changes, and discuss team leadership strategies

Physical Demands:

Work will require extended increments of movement including but not limited to: moving between rooms and buildings, standing, sitting, and occasional lifting of >30 lbs.
