Department Overview:

International Student Services (ISS) serves students on F-1 and J-1 student visas. We provide advising, activities, and advocacy for international students on the UW-Madison campus and in the community. We also plan many events that U.S. students can attend to learn about different cultures and perspectives.

This intern will be working with and supervised by the International Reach Coordinator and focused primarily on assisting with the International Reach cultural speakers program. https://iss.wisc.edu/international-reach/

Schedule:

Weekly scheduled shifts that are decided between student intern and their supervisor plus some evening and weekend work for events. Must be flexible and willing to work some evenings and weekends. These evening and weekend shifts will be scheduled in advance so you can plan accordingly.

Qualifications:

• Current student (undergraduate or graduate) 
• Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends 
• Appreciation/understanding of international perspective and experiences

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to work as a member of a team and individually 
• Strong intercultural communication skills (including written and verbal) 
• Self-motivated 
• Ability to work with a diverse clientele in a fast-paced work environment 
• Attention to detail and organized 
• Ability to learn new software/programs and systems  
• Willingness to adapt to working with multiple supervisors 
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google workspace

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Experience working in an office or in student leadership positions 
• Experience working with social media (Instagram, Facebook)
• Experience working with Canva, Adobe, Excel, Meta Business Suite
• Experience working with diverse audiences 
• Experience with design principles
• Intercultural experience
• Bilingual or multilingual 
• Creative/artistic
• Experience living in another country 

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Facilitate contact between international student volunteers and requesters to arrange successful presentations
• Monitor International Reach email inbox and social media accounts
• Maintain and update program databases on Microsoft Excel
• Utilize data to create an annual program summary report and presentation
• Recruit new international student volunteers and presentation requesters
• Interview and select new cohort of International Reach ambassadors each Spring
• Market the program to potential requesters on campus and in the community
• Create promotional materials, including flyers and social media content
• Event Support
- Take photos and videos at events and programs
- Help with set-up / tech support at ISS programs (especially after-hours events) 
- Encouraging participation in events  
• Assist in training newly hired interns  
• Assist Global Engagement Team in connecting with students in an effective/meaningful way 
• Contribute ideas and help design new initiatives and activities that promote intercultural learning and cross-cultural communication 
• Collect student feedback 
• Assess and evaluate program outcomes to continuously improve events and programs
• Meet weekly with Reach coordinator (supervisor) to collaborate and effectively run the program
• Complete semesterly performance reviews and goal setting 
• Attend monthly retreats with other interns and Global Engagement staff
• Other projects based on candidate’s own talents and interests

Help with events including (but not limited to): International Reach Training Socials, Madison International Festival, Sun Prairie Multicultural Festival, International Student Welcome and Information Fair (ISWIF), Practicing English and Cultural Exchange (PEACE), Graduation Celebration, Global Café and other affiliated student organization events. 

Physical Demands:

Able to sit for long period in an office or stand for a few hours at an event. Ability to lift 15 lbs and push/pull a cart would be helpful.
