Position Summary/Job Duties:

I am a biology professor looking for part time help with outdoor work on our wooded property in Shorewood Hills.  We have a long term vision to improve the wildlife habitat value of our property while simultaneously generating renewable fuel for our winter heating.  When we moved in 12 years ago, our land was covered by buckthorn and more than 30 other invasive non-native plant species.  Since then, we've made considerable progress in shifting our landscape toward a native Wisconsin woodland that will support a much richer diversity of species.  And we've supplied most of our winter heat by burning wood from invasive tree species.

These days we have a young child, and we could use some help to keep this green system going.  And hopefully, a student worker would benefit from learning about how to heat with wood and identifying native vs invasive plants, in terms of the future careers or green living they wish to pursue.

Specific tasks:

* Use an electric log splitter to split firewood (a slow moving, easy-to-use device).

* Move firewood (sometimes carrying it up >30 steps) and stack it on our wood piles.

* Weeding - learn to identify invasive plants, and depending on the species, pull them out or let me know.

* Keep our paths clear by moving surplus native plants into an adjacent natural area.

Early on, the work will mainly be with firewood, because we have a bunch of cut wood that needs to be split and stacked, and we need to get our winter supply of firewood set. For safety reasons, I do the sawing myself.

Qualifications:

Either prior knowledge or simply an interest in learning about and firewood handling and maintaining a native Wisconsin woodland..

Physical Demands

Must have the strength to lift and handle heavy firewood, and the endurance to perform somewhat physically demanding work for at least a couple hours at a time.
